Information For Patients On Changes In The Child Immunisation Programme

5th June 2013

Dr Andrew Thornett

The government has announced a number of changes in the childhood immunisation programme affecting children under the age of five years.  These changes are going to be introduced from the 1st June.  They include the introduction of a new meningitis vaccine and also a new vaccine for rotavirus, a common cause of diarrhoea and tummy cramps and vomiting in young children.  The new programme has now got the meningitis C vaccine at the age of 3 months and also at the age of 12 – 13 months.  That vaccine involves an injection into the child’s thigh.  The rotavirus vaccine will be given orally at 2 months and 3 months.

These two new vaccines will treat important causes of illness in children and will be offered when you bring your child to the surgery for your routine reviews.  Both are very effective.  The rotavirus vaccine will allow us to treat a common cause of illness in children which causes a great deal of distress and many hospital admissions.

If you have any further questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery.
